Questions about the class and delivery of the class:

Who has to take these classes?
Any tradesmen in the following field that will renew their license after December 31, 2007: Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical (HVAC), Gas Fitters.

Why do I have to take a class? The class will inform you of the code changes taking place April 2008.

How do I know these classes are accepted by the state? The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations maintains a list of approved educational providers. You may check at: www.dpor.virigina.gov

What do the classes cover? Major changes in code with particular focus on changes that will affect installations.

How long are these classes? Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical are three hours long. Fuel/Gas is one hour long.

Where are the classes given? We offer these classes on-line which means you can take the class on any computer that has internet access.

What if I don’t have three straight, uninterrupted hours to take a class? You may save your progress at any point and exit the program.

How long do I have to complete the course? You will have one week from your registration date to complete the class. Should you not complete the class within a week, any progress saved will be deleted and you will need to reregister.

What if I fail the class? You may re-register for the class again.

WORKBOOKS:
Do I need the code book to take a class? Not necessarily. A workbook is included with the cost of the class that you download to your computer. The workbook will contain the program information, just not all of the code. If you want to use the code book, you will still be able to follow the program as the code page number and section will be listed at the top of each slide.

How do I get one of the continuing education workbooks? Once you have enrolled for the program, you will be given instructions to access the workbook from the digital library. The workbook is in PDF format and can be saved directly to your computer. We have made every effort to condense the workbooks as much as possible so that printing from a home printer is not difficult.

CERTIFICATES
Do I get a certificate at the end of the program? Yes. When you have successfully completed the class, you will be able to print your certificate. Contractors Institute does not mail initial certificates.

What if I lose my certificate? A replacement certificate can be issued through Contractors Institute for a charge of $25.

REPORTING:
Once I finish the class, what do I do with the certificate? You will need to mail a copy of the certificate to the state with your renewal paperwork.

Does Contractors Institute notify the state that I’ve taken the course? Yes. We are required to notify the state of all tradesmen who take the training. It may take up to four weeks for the information to be displayed in the state's database. Students are encouraged to take the course well in advance of their license expiration date to allow the state enough time to process the CEU credits. Students are also encouraged to keep communications with the state to mail and not via telephone.

The registration requires my tradesman number but I don’t have my card. How can I get this? You can obtain your number by going to the following website and using License Lookup: www.dpor.virginia.gov/dporweb/dpormainwelcome.cfm

LICENSE RENEWAL:
License Renewal: Completion of the CEU program does not mean that your license is renewed. You must renew your license with DPOR.

How do I renew my license? There are 2 options: On-line or by mail.

On-line: The Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation is printing a Personal Identification Number (PIN) on most license renewal notices. Please note that you must have this PIN to pay renewal fees through the Web site.

The DPOR renewal PIN is temporary - valid for one renewal only. Its purpose is to allow secure login and payment of the renewal fee online. Access to online renewal payment service is available until your renewal payment is received or until the end of your renewal grace period, whichever occurs first. After an online renewal payment has been received, subsequent logins will be allowed only until the end of the grace period and only to view the receipt page - no further payments or address changes will be permitted until the next renewal cycle begins.

In some cases, your renewal notice may not have a PIN printed on it. There are a few reasons this may occur. For example, if you have not completed the continuing education at least 60 days before your license expires (which allows time for your course to be recorded on DPOR’s system), then you may not have a PIN on your renewal notice. Also, if your tradesman license record on DPOR’s system does not have a social security number listed for you, then you will not get a PIN. If your renewal notice does not have the PIN printed on it or if you lose your renewal notice, DPOR cannot issue another PIN and you must renew by mail or in person at DPOR’s offices.

The renewal payment web site uses 128-bit SSL encryption in order to ensure secure communication; this protects confidential information from interception and hacking.
In order to pay a renewal fee online, it will be necessary to have the following information:

• Tax ID for business license / Social Security Number or DMV Control Number for individual license (you must use the number you previously provided)
• License Number
• DPOR PIN (printed on your renewal notice mailing)
• Credit Card Information
When all renewal requirements have been met, DPOR will mail your license.
Your payment transaction must be completed before midnight - United States Eastern Time - of the due date.

By Mail:

Return the renewal notice with your check or money order payable to Treasurer of Virginia and send to:

Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation
PO Box 11066
Richmond VA 23230-1066

If you choose to pay by mail and use a credit card, go to the DPOR website and print out the credit card form: http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/dporweb/forms/fin/creditcard.doc

How long will it take to get my license renewed?
Please note that there are 50,700 tradesmen, so there are a large number of files sent to the state each week. The report of successful completion of the course may take up to a week before it is sent to the Board. Once the Board receives it, it will take more time for the data to be entered into the system and a new card generated and mailed.

Before contacting state staff about a question concerning license renewal, be sure that you have read all this information and please be patient; the more tradesmen that contact the state with a question means less time for state staff to work on processing the renewals.
